Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, many Americans will be traveling for the weekend in near-record numbers. And according to AAA, this year, more people are planning to hit the roads, the skies, and the rails this weekend, with more than 41.5 million Americans traveling. That’s a nearly 5% increase over last year’s totals and the highest number of travelers than it has been in more than a dozen years! Oh and this is despite the fact that gas prices are higher than they have been since 2014!

Since most people traveling for the holiday weekend will likely be driving, safety is going to be incredibly important. We have some helpful tips that will make the drive go just a little bit better.

Service Your Vehicle

Make sure that your vehicle is running in its best shape for your drive. Scheduling a service appointment to make sure that your oil has been changed, tire pressure is optimal and everything is running smoothly. Check out our service specials page for special savings!

Avoid Leaving During Peak Hours

If you can, avoid driving to or from your vacation destination during peak hours. It’s best to not drive when everyone else is hitting the road too, so, if you can, try not to leave when everyone else is. Consider leaving early on Friday morning, or coming home on Sunday evening.

Don’t Drive Distracted

Put that cell phone away! It’s so easy to want to respond to that text, change that song, or just look at your phone. We’re all attached to our phones, but when you’re driving, just keep it in the glove box.

Practice Safe Driving Habits

Make sure seat belts are secure and, if you’re traveling with children are in safety seats that are right for the height, weight, and age. While you can’t predict how other drivers will be on the road, make sure you are on high alert while driving this weekend. Defensive driving during busy weekends like this is going to be key.

Know Your Vehicle

If it’s your car, you probably know the ins and outs of it, but if it’s a rental, make sure you give the vehicle the once over before hitting the road. We’ve all been there where we just get on the road and drive after getting in the rental car….but wait…it’s raining suddenly and you don’t know how to work the windshield wipers! Don’t get caught unaware.

Don’t Speed

Finally, don’t speed this weekend. It’s a holiday weekend, which means that the police will be out in full force! Don’t let an expensive ticket ruin the start or end to your vacation weekend.

While we know you are planning for a great Memorial Day weekend, therefore we want you to drive in a smart and cautious way. Making sure you are safe along the way is something that is so easy to do, but is also easy to take for granted.
